Why We Recommend SPF 15 Over SPF 50 – Let’s Talk Sun Protection the Environ Way

When it comes to sun protection, it’s easy to think the higher the SPF, the better. But here at Skyrah Beauty, where we genuinely care about educating our clients and offering honest skincare advice, we like to dig a little deeper.

Because the truth is — more isn’t always more when it comes to sun cream.

We’re proud to work with Environ, a brand we trust completely. They recommend an SPF of 15 — and we know that might surprise a few people, especially when SPF 30 and 50 are plastered all over the shops. But once you understand why, it really makes sense.

Understanding UV Rays: What Are We Actually Protecting Against?

There are three types of ultraviolet (UV) rays that reach us from the sun:

UVA – “A” for Ageing
These rays go deep into the dermis (the second layer of skin), damaging collagen and elastin. They’re responsible for fine lines, wrinkles, and premature ageing. They’re present all year around — even on cloudy days — and can pass through glass.

UVB – “B” for Burning
These rays affect the epidermis (the top layer of skin) and are the ones that cause sunburn. They’re strongest during the sunnier months, especially between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its highest and most damaging.

UVC – “C” for Cancer (and fortunately Blocked)
These are the most dangerous rays, but the ozone layer blocks them completely. No sunscreen is designed to protect against UVC — which is why protecting the ozone (and your skin) really does matter.

A Little-Known Fact About Vitamin D

Not many people realise this — but UVA rays can actually destroy Vitamin D in the skin, while UVB helps our bodies produce it naturally.

If we block too much sun exposure with very high SPFs or avoid the sun altogether, we could end up with reduced Vitamin D levels, which are vital for healthy skin, bones, and immune function.

So, Is SPF 50 Better Than 15?

This is the part that surprises most people:

  • SPF 15 blocks 93.3% of UVB rays
  • SPF 30 blocks 96.7%
  • SPF 50 blocks 98%

The difference between SPF 15 and 50 is just 4.7% more protection.
But to get that tiny extra bit of coverage, we often end up using a lot more chemical filters — which isn’t always the best option for sensitive, reactive, or compromised skin.

Environ believes in working with the skin, not against it. That’s why they created RAD SPF 15 and RAD Shield Mineral SPF 15 — two fantastic options, depending on what your skin needs.

Why We Recommend Environ’s Sun Protection

RAD Antioxidant SPF 15 – Chemical & Physical Combo

A light, creamy formula that combines chemical and physical filters with antioxidant power.

Key ingredients and benefits:

  • Titanium Dioxide: A physical sunscreen filter that reflects UV radiation and is gentle on sensitive skin.
  • Octinoxate & Oxybenzone: Absorb UVB and some UVA rays to reduce sunburn risk.
  • Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): A powerful antioxidant that helps brighten the skin and neutralise free radicals caused by sun exposure.
  • Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate): Supports skin healing, boosts moisture, and defends against oxidative stress.
  • Beta-Carotene (Provitamin A): A plant-based antioxidant that helps protect skin from environmental stress and sun damage.

RAD Shield Mineral SPF 15 – 100% Mineral

A lightweight mineral sunscreen ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin, offering broad-spectrum protection without any chemical filters.

Key ingredients and benefits:

  • Zinc Oxide & Titanium Dioxide: Provide gentle, non-irritating, broad-spectrum UV protection. Great for redness-prone or post-treatment skin.
  • Polyphenols from Rooibos and Honeybush: Potent antioxidants that calm inflammation and fight free radicals.
  • Vitamin E (Tocopherol): Adds moisturising benefits and helps reduce damage from UV exposure.

Both formulas are designed to work with your skin, not overload it, supporting your skin barrier while protecting from environmental aggressors.

Our Tips for Smart Sun Protection

  • Wear SPF daily, not just on holiday or in summer
  • Avoid direct sun between 11am and 3pm when UV is strongest
  • Reapply SPF every 2 hours when outside, and always after swimming or sweating
  • Don’t forget easily missed areas like ears, neck, hands, and feet
  • Use a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection

We love helping our clients understand why we recommend what we do. It’s not just about selling products — it’s about giving you honest, evidence-based advice that supports your skin long-term.
